Bodyguard Training and First Aid
First Aid skills are important in any walk of life, but being skilled in First Aid is absolutely fundamental to being a Close protection professional. Some schoolchildren are now taught very basic First Aid. This is a good thing. First Aid should be on everybody’s curriculum. Over the years, I have seen and been amazed at the number of bodyguards’ CV/resumes that make no mention of First Aid. When questioned in interview, these candidates mention that yes, they have done First Aid in the Army: ‘about ten years ago’ or ‘I did a lifesaving course, “a while ago”‘. This is simply not good enough. I can guarantee with some certainty that First Aid skills will be needed in a career of close protection. You may never need that bootleg turn that you practise over and over in the car or the quick draw and chair roll that you have perfected for hotel corridors; but you will need your knowledge of First Aid.Professional Bodyguards Must Train in First AidFirst Aid is a skill like any other; it needs constant practice to remain effective. Techniques and ideas change so it is imperative that you carry out continual training and remain up to date. Most books on ‘close protection’ include a chapter on First Aid but this is a token gesture and often used only to pad out the book. Authors tend to stick to sexy First Aid like suckling chest wounds, tracheotomies and gunshot wounds. They ignore the simple facts, such [...]

Bodyguard Jobs and How to Find Them
Bodyguard Jobs and How to Find Them Once you complete your bodyguard training getting your first bodyguard Job will obviously be high on your list of priorities. However there are a couple of things you need to do immediately after your training. First you need to apply for and receive your licence before applying for any positions. Getting a licence from the SIA ( Security Industry Authority) in the UK should in theory take less than 4 weeks but many wait 8 weeks and some close protection officers have waited 12 weeks before their licence arrives! You should bear this delay in mind if you are considering giving up your regular job whilst waiting for your licence. It could well be many months between finishing your expensive bodyguard training and earning from your first bodyguard job. The best advice for finding that first job is to initially avoid the internet. Start with the paid advertisements in your local telephone directory, look under “Security” as well as “Detective Agencies” and see who offers “Bodyguards” or “Close Protection” as a service. When approaching local companies interviews can be arranged easily and quickly, they will let potential employers put a face to a name and because they know that you can be called upon to work at very short notice this can have a very positive effect on your job prospects. When you initially call, tell them you are local and ask if you can send them a CV/Resume most companies will [...]
SIA Training for Door Supervisor Licence
As Britain faces up to the problems of a recession which is worse than anything the economy has faced since the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, there is naturally some concern over the prospect of finding work. For anyone who has been left without a job by the collapse of numerous companies and the mass lay-off of employees that has been undertaken by organisations looking to make a saving, there is the prospect of spending a lot of time unemployed. Re-skilling is now of more importance than ever, as people realise that there is every chance that they will not be able to find a job that fits into their area of expertise. Making such changes will not be easy, but it does provide the prospect of improved employability, just when it is most important. At the present time, the security industry in the United Kingdom is under-staffed to the tune of 90,000 positions. This is in comparison with many other industries being unable to take on any more staff and having to make cutbacks. Industries like the automotive and banking sectors are suffering so badly in the recession that in order to keep running they are having to drastically reduce their scope. Anyone with expertise in these sectors is as a result likely to find that their skills are less in demand and any jobs that become available will be highly contested by individuals of equal ability. Even the more skilled members of these sectors [...]
Manned Security Guard Services – Price Over Service
You have probably noticed that most shops and offices now employ security officers. Generally these security officers will be located somewhere near the front door, either sitting at a reception desk, monitoring CCTV or standing at the front door. Having worked in security for most of my life, it is now second nature for me to look at what security is in place when I visit somewhere. This usually takes the form of just having a look at how the security officers operate. If you are going to employ security service, then you obviously have something specific in mind that you want them to do. I recently visited a well-known high-street supermarket that I have been to many times in my local area. I know that they employ one security officer. On entry there was no security – nothing wrong with that so far. Having a quick look around I couldn’t see security anywhere. I could however, see who I thought was a traffic warden thumbing through the newspapers. However, on closer inspection I noticed a tiny badge on her hat that said security. By the time I left the supermarket, she was standing by the front door looking totally disinterested in what was going on. She looked in a world of her own. I understand that this store uses security as more of a deterrent rather than to catch shoplifters, but for this to work your security officer needs to be seen as being alert and proactive. Having [...]
